What you’ll make
Sew the Laia Kids Shorts, a comfortable summer style with an elastic waistband, two front patch pockets and gathered ruffles at the hems.
The pull-on design is practical for children and offers plenty of ways to change the look through fabric, color and optional details.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Press, position and topstitch matching patch pockets.
- Gather the hem ruffles and distribute the fullness evenly.
- Join mirrored front and back pieces and align the inseam seams.
- Finish raw edges with a serger, zigzag or overlock-style stitch.
- Sew an elastic casing, insert the elastic without twisting and close the opening.
Fabric options
The shorts can be sewn in woven or knit fabric. Suggested summer wovens include poplin, cotton, chambray and washed linen.
Stable poplin holds pressed pocket edges easily. A slippery fabric may need pins, basting or temporary fabric glue to keep the pockets accurately positioned.
Make it your own
Keep the gathered hem ruffles for a playful finish or omit them for simpler shorts. Remove the front pockets or substitute another pocket style.
The sample has no back pockets, but you can add two. Decorative topstitching can personalize plain fabric, and an extra row of stitching can hold the waistband elastic.
Children’s sizes
The pattern includes sizes 2/3 through 14/15, covering listed heights from 95 cm to 170 cm.
The chart spans waist measurements of 49–72 cm and hip measurements of 54–88 cm. Use the full chart rather than age alone when selecting a size.
