What you’ll make
Sew a light children’s summer top with narrow shoulders, a gathered lower ruffle and neatly bound edges.
A button-and-loop keyhole finishes the back, providing an easy opening without a placket or zipper.
The pattern covers ages 2 to 15, making Lola suitable for younger children and teens.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Stabilize curved and bias-cut edges before construction.
- Bind the back keyhole, neckline and armholes.
- Insert and secure a cord loop for the back button.
- Gather the ruffle evenly to fit the upper top.
- Join and finish the shoulder, side and ruffle seams.
- Hem with a straight, twin-needle or decorative stitch.
Fabric choices
Lola can be sewn in a woven or knit fabric. The sample uses poplin, while denim and viscose are also suggested. A knit creates a more casual, sporty version.
Match the needle to the fabric. The class uses a universal size 80 needle for poplin and recommends a ballpoint, jersey or stretch needle for knits.
Make it your own
- Deepen the lower ruffle to turn the top into a dress.
- Add two small rounded pockets to a solid or color-blocked version.
- Use contrasting fabrics for the bodice, ruffle or pockets.
- Use a snap instead of the button-and-loop closure.
- Try the garment on before choosing the final hem length.
Pair Lola with the Nil trousers or the Coco skort for a coordinated summer outfit.
