What you’ll make
Sew the Maggie Coat, an unlined women’s coat with a large paneled hood, separating front zipper, long sleeves, shaping darts, and two pockets.
The coat’s interior is unlined, with edge finishes chosen according to whether the fabric frays.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Mark and sew the front and back darts.
- Prepare the pocket openings and attach the pockets.
- Join the upper and lower body sections with aligned seams.
- Insert the sleeves before closing the side and underarm seams.
- Assemble and attach the paneled hood.
- Align a separating zipper across the front seams.
- Finish the hem and cuffs for the chosen fabric.
Choosing coat fabric
The class discusses coating, bouclé, and suede-like fabrics. A non-fraying fabric simplifies the unlined finish, while fraying edges can be secured with a zigzag or serger.
Select a needle suited to the fabric’s weight. The demonstration uses a heavier needle in bulky areas and a longer stitch for visible topstitching.
Make it your own
Add optional topstitching along the joined body and hood seams. The pocket stitching can be straight, zigzag, or decorative, while a twin needle may suit other seams if the fabric is not too bulky.
Stable, non-fraying fabric can have raw lower and cuff edges secured with straight stitching. Turn and hem these edges when the fabric frays or when you prefer a folded finish.
