What you’ll make

Sew a stuffed hedgehog pincushion with a hidden magnet. It can rest on a metal sewing machine or lamp and can be passed over scattered pins or hand-sewing needles to pick them up.

The hedgehog combines mirrored body panels, ears, a fabric nose appliqué, a shaped base, and stuffing. Pins placed across its back complete the hedgehog effect.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Fuse interfacing safely with a pressing cloth.
  • Prepare mirrored pieces efficiently.
  • Join the upper body with a triple straight stitch.
  • Insert the ears between curved body panels.
  • Fuse and zigzag around a small nose appliqué.
  • Trace the base from the sewn body for an accurate fit.
  • Clip curves, turn, stuff, and add the magnet.

Materials

You’ll need coordinating fabrics, fusible interfacing, felt for the ears, stuffing, and a magnet. Fusible web secures the nose appliqué before stitching.

The eyes may be stitched or drawn with a fabric marker and heat-set from the reverse. Use a blunt turning tool to shape the curves without puncturing the fabric.

Make it your own

Change the fabric combination, ear colors, nose, or eye treatment to give each hedgehog a different expression. Close the stuffed base neatly with the invisible stitch.

The video class includes a printable pattern for the hedgehog’s body, ears, nose, interfacing, and base pieces.
