What you’ll make

Sew a compact zip-around wallet with organized storage for cards, cash, coins, receipts and other small essentials.

Layered card slots sit on both sides, alongside divider pockets, a central zippered coin compartment and a full-length compartment for bills.

A fabric strap and snap secure the wallet. When closed, it measures approximately 12 cm wide × 9 cm high × 2.5 cm thick.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Apply fusible interfacing when lightweight fabric needs more structure.
  • Finish fraying edges with a zigzag, overcasting stitch or serger.
  • Sew and topstitch the zippered coin compartment.
  • Arrange layered card slots while preserving room for cards.
  • Install the perimeter zipper and finish its ends.
  • Turn and finish the lining, then add the closure strap and snap.

Fabric and supplies

A sturdy canvas-style fabric is recommended for the exterior because it provides body and durability. The demonstrated wallet pairs canvas with a poplin lining.

If your fabric is very lightweight, reinforce the indicated pieces with fusible interfacing. The project also uses zippers and a metal or plastic snap.

Make it your own

Replace a front card slot with clear vinyl or mesh to display an ID or photo. You can also vary the number and arrangement of card pockets on each side.

Choose which direction the coin zipper opens, or add two snap positions for a snugger closure when the wallet is empty and more room when it is full.

The video class includes a printable A4 pattern and demonstrates the project from fabric preparation through installation of the final snap.
