What you’ll make
Sew a gathered skirt with an elastic waist, side-seam pockets and a buttoned front. Separate front bands provide the button-and-buttonhole detail.
Draft the skirt from body measurements or use the printable pattern. The custom method lets you choose where the waistband sits and the finished skirt length.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Take the required body and length measurements.
- Calculate the back, fronts and button bands.
- Insert pockets into the side seams.
- Create an elastic casing.
- Distribute and secure the gathers.
- Sew buttonholes and buttons by machine.
Fabric and supplies
The striped sample uses cotton woven fabric. A cotton-Lycra cretonne version has more drape and movement, so your fabric choice can make the silhouette crisper or more fluid.
You’ll also need elastic, buttons and interfacing for the front bands. Fabric needs vary with the chosen circumference, skirt length, fabric width and print direction.
Make it your own
Choose whether the skirt begins at the waist or hips, then select your preferred length. The worksheet uses the chosen circumference to create generous gathered fullness.
Adjust the pocket height for the wearer. Choose the button spacing to suit the finished length, keeping the layout even along the front bands.
Sizing
Draft a custom skirt from the wearer’s measurements, or use the printable pattern in sizes 34/36 through 54/56.
The video is accompanied by a custom-drafting worksheet and a separate multi-size pattern, giving you two ways to prepare the skirt.
