What you’ll make

Marta is a flowing asymmetric party dress with a diagonal neckline and an open, Greek-inspired sleeve that reveals the arm as the fabric moves.

Elastic secures the diagonal neckline above the bust, while the long flared body creates the movement that defines the design. The featured sleeve ends in a narrow band.

What you’ll learn in these classes

Sew the main dress seams in stretch fabric with a suitable needle and seam finish.
Construct the open sleeve and attach its smaller band evenly.
Attach the sleeve to the asymmetric upper edge or finish the opening for a sleeveless version.
Apply the neckline elastic, keeping the shoulder section relaxed and stretching it where required.
Choose a hem treatment for the fabric and check the final length before finishing.
Shorten or lengthen a flared pattern without losing its original flare.

Fabric and elastic

Marta is designed for fabric with stretch and fluid movement. The class uses a stretch needle and explains seam finishes for fabrics that do or do not fray.

The neckline uses elastic 3–5 cm wide. The pattern information provides the required elastic length for each size.

Make it your own

Sew the featured split sleeve, close its open edge, substitute the sleeve from the Bali Dress or omit the sleeve for a minimal version.

Keep the dramatic long length or use the companion alteration class to make a shorter version while preserving the flare’s shape and fullness.

Sizing

The pattern includes grouped sizes 34/36 through 54/56. The chart spans bust measurements of 86–132 cm, waists of 64–110 cm and hips of 90–136 cm.
