What you’ll make
Sew the Monaco, an asymmetrical one-shoulder design with gathers along the shoulder and opposite side. Its lined upper section is designed for stretch fabric.
Make a dress, separate top, skirt, or coordinated set. The skirt can be short or long, giving the pattern several distinct outcomes.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Sew stretch fabric with suitable needles and seams.
- Form bust darts in the bodice lining.
- Gather the shoulder and side to fit the lining.
- Join and turn the lined one-shoulder bodice.
- Attach the bodice to the skirt for the dress.
- Add an elastic waistband to the separate skirt.
- Choose a suitable hem finish for stretch fabric.
Fabric guidance
This pull-on design has no zipper, so the fabric must stretch enough to pass comfortably over the body. Demonstrated options include viscose jersey, jersey, a shiny stretch knit, and Lycra.
The class discusses ballpoint, jersey, and stretch needles, plus construction with an overlocker or suitable stretch stitches on a standard sewing machine.
Make it your own
Choose a short or long skirt, then sew the Monaco as a dress, separate top, separate skirt, or matching set.
Use the same fabric throughout or combine different colors and prints. For an ungathered bodice, the class explains how to use the lining pieces as the outer pieces while retaining the darts.
Adjust the hem after trying on the garment. Depending on the knit, you can sew a hem or leave a raw or overlocked edge.
Pattern sizing
The pattern covers sizes 34/36 through 54/56. The chart spans a chest of 86–132 cm, waist of 64–110 cm, and hips of 90–136 cm.
