Multipurpose Backpack with a Clear Window
Make a multipurpose backpack with a beautiful clear window that lets you see what’s inside. Floating stars inside the clear vinyl add a wonderfully original touch.

What you’ll make
Sew a lightweight drawstring backpack with a double clear-vinyl window. Small fabric stars with batting float between the transparent layers for a playful aquarium effect.
The demonstrated version works as a beach, snack or daycare bag. The drawstring closes the top and passes through lower fabric loops to form simple backpack straps.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Mark and prepare a circular window opening.
- Make small fabric shapes with batting.
- Enclose appliqués between two vinyl layers.
- Sew vinyl slowly with a walking foot.
- Finish the upper edge and make the casing.
- Insert lower loops before sewing the side seams.
- Route one cord through the casing and loops.
Materials
The project uses fabric panels, flexible clear vinyl made for sewing, bias tape, cord and batting. Thin batting supports the floating stars, while soft filling gives the cord-end stars more volume.
A serger can finish the main seams, but the class also demonstrates a straight seam followed by zigzag stitching on a conventional machine.
Make it your own
Replace the stars with fish, flowers, hearts or another simple fabric shape. You can also change the window outline, although a smooth shape is easier to sew accurately in vinyl.
Adjust the print, window position and backpack scale for a child or adult. Lengthen the cord when enlarging the bag or when a lower fit is preferred.
Demonstrated dimensions
The class begins with two fabric panels measuring 51 x 30 cm. They are presented as a starting point that can be enlarged, with the window and cord adjusted to suit.
