What you’ll make

Sew the Nicole, a loose dress with a round neckline, wide batwing-style sleeves, and an asymmetrical hem that is longer in back.

Finish it with the full three-quarter-length sleeve sections or leave them off for short sleeves. The oversized shape hangs away from the body and moves with the fabric.

The roomy cut can also work during pregnancy; check the front length before choosing the final hem.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Prepare curved edges for knit or woven fabric.
  • Stabilize woven curves with staystitching or fusible stay tape.
  • Join the shoulders, sleeves, and side seams.
  • Quarter and attach a knit neckband evenly.
  • Finish knit sleeve hems with a twin needle.
  • Choose a suitable finish for the lower edge.

Fabric with movement

The sample uses modal knit for stretch, drape, and movement. Viscose, crepe, or another fluid fabric can also suit the design.

Linen creates a firmer silhouette. For woven fabric, the class explains how to adapt the neckline strip and stabilize the curved edges.

Make it your own

Leave off the lower sleeve section for short sleeves or attach it for the three-quarter-length version. With a directional print, consider how the motif will sit along the sleeve.

On a suitable knit, the lower edge can be left raw as shown or hemmed. Try on the dress before choosing the final front and back lengths.

Pattern sizes

The Nicole pattern is provided in grouped sizes 36/38 through 48/50.

If PDF patterns are new to you, the PDF sewing pattern tutorial explains how to assemble one.
