What you’ll make
Sew a structured wraparound cover sized for your planner or notebook. It protects the book while providing dedicated storage for pens, cards and loose papers.
The interior includes a large pocket, a smaller card pocket, a pen holder and a flap that holds the planner in place. An inner strap holds the outer flap when the cover is closed.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Calculate dimensions for any planner or notebook.
- Arrange storage around the book and closure.
- Sew thick, non-fraying materials without a lining.
- Create appliqués with fusible web.
- Finish appliqués with free-motion stitching or zigzag.
- Help sticky faux leather feed smoothly.
Materials that hold their shape
The sample uses 3 mm felt with faux-leather details. Thick faux leather, softshell or neoprene can also provide structure for this unlined design.
Test whether your machine can sew three layers. If the stack is too bulky, omit the separate card pocket, divide a larger pocket with stitching or use a thinner material for that piece.
Make it your own
Choose the opening direction, pocket arrangement and closure position before sewing. The guide adapts the design to small or large planners rather than prescribing one finished size.
Add a year, word or motif as an appliqué. A separate PDF provides number styles, and the class explains how to prepare letters and numbers when using fusible web.
Close the cover with magnetic snaps, regular snaps or hook-and-loop tape. Make decorative spine or corner pieces from faux leather, Kraft-Tex or contrasting felt.
Adapt it to your planner
Measure the planner’s height and its width when closed. The downloadable guide shows how to use those measurements for the cover base and storage pieces.
The class includes the video lesson, an adaptable measurement guide and a separate file of number templates for optional decoration.
