What you’ll make

Turn a table into a fabric playhouse with a fitted, tablecloth-style cover. The sample includes a roll-up door, curtained windows, a felt fence, a dimensional mailbox with letters and a clothesline.

A small felt basket beside the clothesline can hold clothespins or play clothes. The interactive design can be adapted to the dimensions and shape of your own table.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Measure a table and calculate the fabric needed for the cover.
  • Test the fit before trimming the corner excess.
  • Finish door and window openings with bias-bound corners.
  • Sew a roll-up fabric door with ties.
  • Gather, position and secure pairs of window curtains.
  • Create felt appliqués and a mailbox with usable depth.
  • Reinforce clothesline cords and manage large fabric sections.

Fabric and materials

The sample uses muslin for the playhouse base, but printed fabric is another option. Curtain fabric, bias binding and cord form the working door, windows and clothesline.

Thin felt is recommended for the fence, mailbox, letters, posts and basket because its edges do not fray. A walking foot can help when sewing felt to the large base.

Make it your own

Mark the features while the cover is on your table. Move the openings, add windows on other sides or simplify the playhouse by using fewer decorations.

  • Leave the corners loose or fit them more closely to the table.
  • Add window crossbars, interior pockets or other felt scenery.
  • Replace the fence with a tree and removable hook-and-loop fruit.
  • Change the curtain colors, contrast stitching and appliqué shapes.

Reference measurements

The sample fits a table measuring 75 cm wide, 150 cm long and 73 cm high. Its windows measure 30 cm by 30 cm, and the door opening measures 40 cm wide by 55 cm high.

These are reference dimensions. Adjust the cover and feature placement if your table differs from the class sample.

The class includes a PDF with the sample measurements, material guidance and felt shapes that can be sewn onto the playhouse or used for play.
