Raincoat / Waterproof Jacket for Women and Kids

What you’ll make
Sew a longer hooded raincoat in women’s or children’s sizing. The design has raglan sleeves, a snap front, and two large patch pockets with optional flaps.
Add eyelets and a drawstring to adjust the hood around the face. The same treatment can be used at the hem.
The sleeves can remain straight or end in elastic cuffs. A small loop at the back neck lets you hang the coat.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Help waterproof or coated fabric feed smoothly.
- Use clips to avoid unnecessary pinholes.
- Shape the hood and add reinforced eyelets.
- Sew patch pockets, optional flaps, and snaps.
- Assemble raglan sleeves and flatten stiff seams.
- Attach the hood and finish the snap-front edges.
- Make elastic cuffs and an optional hem channel.
Fabric and materials
The class compares a light, supple waterproof fabric with a stiffer waterproof material. Softshell is used for one photographed women’s version.
Test a scrap before sewing. A Teflon foot, pattern paper, or paper tape on a standard presser foot can help when the surface sticks.
Clips avoid visible pinholes. Snaps close the front; eyelets, cord, and elastic are needed only for the options you choose.
Make it your own
Add drawstrings at the hood and hem, at only one location, or not at all. Finish the cuffs straight or gather them with elastic.
Make the large pockets with or without flaps and snaps. On stiffer fabric, topstitching can help flatten the flaps and major seams.
Adjust the hem depth after checking the coat on its wearer.
Sizing
The women’s pattern includes sizes 36/38, 40/42, 44/46, and 48/50.
The children’s pattern includes sizes 2/3, 4/5, 6/7, 8/9, 10/11, and 12/13.
