What you’ll make

Make the Reus, a binder pencil case with a roomy main zippered compartment and a separate zippered front pocket. The mesh front lets you identify smaller supplies without opening it.

Three attachment points allow the case to fit inside a ring binder. The finished case measures approximately 23 cm wide by 19 cm high.

What you’ll learn in this class

Bind the top of a mesh pocket with bias binding.
Join the mesh panel to a zipper and supporting fabric panel.
Install and topstitch the main zipper.
Stabilize layered pieces before final assembly.
Shape an unlined case and keep its seam allowances orderly.
Match the attachment spacing to your binder.
Install eyelets with the appropriate setting tools.

Fabric and materials

Canvas gives the unlined case useful structure. Softshell, faux leather and coated fabric are also suggested, with coated fabric providing an easier-to-clean surface.

Use mesh for a visible front pocket or replace it with fabric. The project also uses two zippers, bias binding and three eyelets, with stitched buttonholes offered as an alternative.

Make it your own

Replace the mesh with fabric for an opaque front pocket.
Choose whether the zippers open in the same or opposite directions.
Use stitched buttonholes if you do not have eyelets.
Bind the visible inside seam allowances if desired.
Mark the attachment spacing directly from your binder.

Finished size

The finished Reus pencil case is approximately 23 cm wide by 19 cm high.
