Birthday Crown
At last, one of the tutorials you’ve requested, begged, and pleaded for most often on social media: the reversible birthday crown!

What you’ll make
Sew a padded, reversible birthday crown with an adjustable hook-and-loop closure. Two contrasting fabrics give the crown a different look on each side.
A removable fabric medallion displays the birthday number. Its hook-and-loop attachment lets you change the number for another birthday or replace it with a different decoration.
What you’ll learn in these classes
- Layer two crown fabrics with batting.
- Sew and turn the crown points cleanly.
- Close the lower edge with zigzag stitching.
- Add an adjustable hook-and-loop closure.
- Make a fused appliqué from a mirrored number template.
- Build a padded, removable number medallion.
- Finish the lower edge with bias binding instead.
Fabric and notions
Choose two matching or contrasting fabrics and place batting between them. Hook-and-loop tape adjusts the crown and secures the removable number medallion.
Fusible web supports the number appliqué. In the bias-binding class, clips or pins hold the folded binding in position while it is sewn.
Make it your own
Use a different fabric on each side, choose matching or contrasting thread, and change the birthday number as the child grows. The medallion can also feature another appliquéd decoration.
Close the lower edge with a wide zigzag, or cover it with bias binding. The binding can be sewn with straight, zigzag or decorative stitching.
Sizing notes
The downloadable crown pattern provides three ranges: 0–12 months, 1–2 years and age 3 and up.
The demonstrated crown is cut at approximately 57 cm long and finishes at approximately 55 cm. The hook-and-loop overlap allows the fit to be adjusted.
The two video classes include a downloadable A4 crown pattern and a separate PDF of number templates.
