What you’ll make
Sew a lined costume cape that can be reversible, with an optional hood and your preferred closure. Adapt the design for storybook, fantasy, or superhero costumes.
The sample combines red knit with a warm sherpa lining and a faux-leather clasp. The same structure can be sewn in matching or contrasting fabrics.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Measure the wearer and choose the cape length.
- Cut a semicircular cape with a curved neckline.
- Cut mirrored hood pieces and assemble both layers.
- Match the hood center to the cape neckline.
- Ease or gather stretch fabric to fit a stable lining.
- Turn the lined cape and finish the opening and closure.
Fabric choices
The cape can be made from knit or woven fabric. The class demonstrates knit with sherpa and shows how to manage a stretchy outer layer against a stable lining.
For knit, use a ballpoint or jersey needle; a walking foot can also help. The sample’s faux-leather clasp is sewn with a Microtex needle.
Make it your own
Use one color or several, omit the hood, add appliqués, or choose ties instead of a clasp. Position ties between the layers before sewing and turning the cape.
For a truly reversible cape, choose a closure that works from both sides. The sample clasp is attached to one face, making the sherpa side the lining.
Flexible sizing
The source describes the design as suitable for children from approximately 18 months to 7 years. The cape length is measured for the individual wearer.
The class includes a sewing video and a downloadable hood pattern. The video explains how to measure and cut the cape for the wearer and desired length.
