What you’ll make
The Rita Skirt combines a fitted, lined yoke with a softly gathered, slightly flared skirt. A pointed front yoke and front and back darts shape the waist and hips.
An invisible zipper closes the center back. Side-seam pockets add practical storage, although they sit lower than usual because of the deep yoke.
The finished skirt has a neat fit above the yoke seam, with volume and movement below it.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Mark, sew and press shaping darts.
- Insert an invisible zipper.
- Line and finish shaped yokes.
- Sew side-seam pockets that stay neatly inside.
- Gather the skirt evenly around the yoke.
- Match centers and side seams along a shaped seam.
- Check and adjust the yoke fit before assembly.
Fabric choices
Choose a woven fabric. Poplin, cotton or linen gives a lighter finish, while micro-corduroy or denim gives the skirt more body. Viscose can create a fluid summer version.
Plaid can work but requires careful pattern matching. Jersey is not recommended, although a woven fabric with a small amount of elastane can be suitable.
Make it your own
Leave out the pockets for a cleaner silhouette, or keep them for everyday practicality. Try on the completed yoke before attaching the skirt so you can take it in or let it out.
Shorten or lengthen the hem to suit your preferred proportions. Check the fabric required before lengthening the flared section.
Sizes and measurements
The pattern includes sizes 34 through 56, covering waist measurements of 64–112 cm and hip measurements of 90–138 cm.
Listed finished skirt lengths range from 79 cm in size 34 to 84.5 cm in size 56.
The video class is accompanied by Rita pattern files in A4 and A0 formats and a size and fabric information sheet.
