What you’ll make

The Ruby is a zip-top shoulder bag measuring approximately 31 cm wide, 33 cm tall, and 8 cm deep.

Its front zipper pocket includes a quilted panel, while the lined main compartment contains an organizer pocket. The shoulder straps pass through tabs at the top of the bag.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Shape and divide an interior organizer pocket.
  • Stabilize and quilt the front-pocket panel in a diamond design.
  • Install the front and top zippers using continuous or closed zippers.
  • Form the bag’s depth and assemble the exterior and lining.
  • Create top tabs that hold the shoulder straps.
  • Turn the bag through the lining and finish the strap and zipper ends.

Fabric and structure

The sample uses faux leather for the exterior and poplin for the lining. Stabilizer supports the front pocket before quilting.

You can also use a fabric exterior with batting for a softer structure. Consider the thickness of your materials because some areas become bulky during construction.

Make it your own

  • Omit the quilting or replace the diamond grid with another design.
  • Change the number and width of the organizer-pocket divisions.
  • Add organizer pockets to both lining panels.
  • Adjust the strap length or substitute cord or chain.
  • Finish the strap and zipper ends with metal fittings or sewn fabric tabs.

Finished size

The finished bag is approximately 31 cm wide, 33 cm tall, and 8 cm deep. Adjust the strap length before sewing to place the bag comfortably on your shoulder.

The class includes printable pattern files in A4 and A0 formats, plus an information PDF covering the project materials.
