Sam Jacket
In this class, I’ll show you how to sew a wonderfully practical softshell jacket for little ones. It features a hood, a zipper closure, and pockets to keep their hands warm. Patterns for ages 4 to 13 are included!

What you’ll make
Sew the Sam Jacket, a children’s hooded jacket with a separating front zipper, zippered side pockets, and adjustable hook-and-loop cuff tabs.
The main sample uses waterproof softshell with a warm interior. Its three-piece hood and closable pockets make it a practical outer layer.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Prepare edges for fabric that frays or stretches.
- Build the shaped pockets and insert their zippers.
- Assemble the body and attach the sleeves.
- Make the adjustable cuff tabs.
- Construct and attach the three-piece hood.
- Install the front zipper and facing.
Fabric options
Softshell is used for the main sample. The instructor also suggests sweatshirt knit, fleece, and other jacket fabrics.
Use a suitable needle and feeding method for stretch fabric. Interfacing can stabilize the front zipper area if the chosen fabric is elastic.
Make it your own
Choose which direction the pocket zippers open and add optional topstitching. The front zipper can be replaced with snaps.
A French terry version shown in the photos creates a softer, sweatshirt-style jacket.
