What you’ll make
Sew the Sarah skirt for kids, a comfortable pull-on style with an elastic waistband and roomy side-seam pockets for small treasures.
The simple front-and-back shape works in woven or knit fabric, while the elastic waist makes the skirt easy for a child to put on independently.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Read the notches for pockets, waistband folds, and hem.
- Cut mirrored pockets and account for directional prints.
- Insert and reinforce pockets within the side seams.
- Finish raw edges with an overlocker or zigzag.
- Press and stitch a clean elastic casing.
- Join and anchor the elastic to limit twisting.
Fabric and materials
Choose woven fabric for a crisp skirt or knit fabric for a softer version. The class uses 3 cm elastic and explains how to match the casing to its width.
A deeper hem can help reduce rolling in knit fabric. Directional prints require attention when cutting the skirt and pocket pieces.
Make it your own
Measure the child and adjust the skirt to the length they prefer. Add a label or another small marker to identify the back.
Pair the skirt with the leggings for women, kids, and babies.
Sizing and fit
The downloadable pattern covers ages 0 through 8. Use the child’s measurements and the stretch of the chosen elastic to confirm the fit.
The video covers the pockets, side seams, edge finishing, elastic casing, and hem, with a downloadable multi-size Sarah skirt pattern.
