What you’ll make
The Segovia is a roomy messenger bag measuring approximately 37 cm wide, 28 cm tall, and 9 cm deep. It is designed to carry a laptop with notebooks, folders, and other daily items.
Inside are two padded dividers, with organizer pockets on one divider. The bag also has a zip-top opening, a front zipper pocket under a flap, hand-carry handles, and an adjustable shoulder strap.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Prepare and identify the exterior, lining, and stabilizer pieces.
- Build padded dividers with flat and dimensional organizer pockets.
- Sew the concealed front pocket and two-slider main zipper.
- Attach reinforced handles and assemble an adjustable shoulder strap.
- Join the structured exterior and lining around the sides, base, and corners.
- Turn the bag through the lining and add support to the back or base.
Fabric and structure
A sturdy fabric with body, such as canvas, is recommended for the exterior, with poplin for the lining. Interfacing and stabilizer support the exterior, dividers, laptop area, and optional base.
The construction is not highly complex, but the project has many parts. Some seams contain several bulky layers, so make sure your machine can handle your chosen materials.
Make it your own
- Omit one padded divider if you only need a laptop compartment.
- Add organizer pockets to one or both dividers and vary their divisions.
- Make the shoulder strap fixed or removable with swivel hooks.
- Use a contrasting fabric for the front-pocket flap.
- Add a removable rigid base instead of fusing support inside the bag.
