What you’ll make

Create a soft elephant toy with contrasting fabrics, textured ears, a fabric tail and a bell inside the filling. An optional translucent layer in the ears adds a crinkling sound.

Color, texture and sound give the demonstrated elephant its sensory character. Omit the plastic and bell to make a simpler fabric plush.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Cut mirrored body and face pieces.
  • Make ears with an optional plastic layer.
  • Insert the ears between the face and body sections.
  • Enclose the tail in the outer seam.
  • Sew and trim curved seams for a smooth shape.
  • Turn and fill the narrow trunk before the body.
  • Close the final opening by hand or machine.

Materials and sensory details

The demonstrated elephant combines coordinating prints with translucent plastic inside the ears, lace trim for the tail, soft filling and a small bell.

The source describes the plastic shown in class as suitable for children’s products. For a baby version, use only material made and certified for that purpose.

Make it your own

Use one fabric throughout or give each ear and side a different print. Adjust the ear position and make the tail from lace, bias tape, matching fabric or cord.

You can also add fabric loops along the body. For non-baby bed-warmer, decorative or draft-stopper versions, the class discusses seeds, rice or sand instead of soft filling.

The video class includes a downloadable elephant pattern.
