What you’ll make
Create a padded fabric book that combines familiar photographs with tactile scenes for young children.
One side of each page holds photos behind clear plastic. The reverse uses appliqué, textured fabrics, ribbons, and interactive details to create animal, weather, and sea scenes.
Eyelets and opening rings make the pages removable. Arrange the photo sides together, display the sensory scenes, mix both sides, or separate the pages for exploration.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Plan page designs around the seams and eyelets.
- Piece fabrics into flat page backgrounds.
- Attach felt, terry, mesh, ribbons, and other textures.
- Make ribbon-secured pieces that tuck behind fabric waves.
- Prepare fabric appliqué with fusible web.
- Sew clear photo pockets without distorting the plastic.
- Pad, turn, finish, and bind removable pages.
Fabric and materials
The sample combines printed cottons with felt, mesh, terry, sherpa-style fabric, and ribbons. Batting gives each page body and adds another tactile layer.
Clear plastic forms the photo pockets. A Teflon or walking foot can improve feeding, while transparent thread keeps the stitching unobtrusive.
Opening rings join the finished pages, allowing them to be removed, reversed, or rearranged.
Make it your own
Use familiar photos and build the sensory scenes around fabrics or motifs you already have. The sample page designs can be adapted to another theme.
Add the child’s name to the cover and choose either alphabet style from the PDF. You can also make fewer pages, provided the eyelets align across the set.
The video class includes a PDF with the materials, page illustrations, assembly references, and two alphabet styles.
