What you’ll make
This machine-skills class does not include a sewn project. Instead, you’ll get to know essential controls for choosing stitches, handling the needle and presser foot, and securing seams.
The instructor compares Alfa and Brother machines, showing how the same functions may use different layouts, labels, or selectors.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Understand how the upper and bobbin threads form a stitch.
- Find the stitch chart and select stitch types and alternate groups.
- Adjust stitch length and identify the tension control.
- Backstitch to secure the beginning and end of a seam.
- Use the handwheel for precise stitches and pivoting at corners.
- Lower the presser foot correctly, change feet, and address thread tangles.
- Recognize when a needle needs replacing and install it correctly.
This is the first lesson in a three-video beginner series. Continue with Setting Up the Machine.
