What you’ll make

Sew a hooded scarf that combines a hood and long wraparound ends in one winter accessory. The adult-size sample pairs knit fabric with a soft sherpa lining.

The scarf extends directly from the hood. Its outer fabric and lining are joined with a clean turned construction around the perimeter.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Extend the printed pattern to establish the scarf length.
  • Cut the outer fabric and lining as mirrored pairs.
  • Sew the shaping darts and construct both hood layers.
  • Match a stretchy knit outer fabric to bulky sherpa.
  • Use clips, basting or a walking foot to control shifting layers.
  • Turn the scarf through an opening on a straight edge.
  • Close the opening by hand or machine.

Fabric choices

The sample uses knit fabric outside and sherpa fleece inside. Polar fleece can replace the sherpa if you prefer its feel.

You can also use two knit fabrics for a reversible version, although it will be less warm. Take care not to stretch the sherpa while matching and sewing the layers.

Make it your own

The class extends each scarf end 95 cm in a straight line from the marked pattern line. Shorten or lengthen that extension to control how the scarf wraps.

The adult pattern can also be adapted for a child. Change the outer color or print, contrast the lining or use two knit fabrics for a lighter accessory.

Sizing and length

The supplied pattern is drafted for an adult. Beyond the printed hood section, the demonstrated scarf adds a straight 95 cm extension at the same width.

The class covers the complete lined construction and includes a downloadable hooded-scarf pattern.
