What you’ll make
The Siena is a sleeveless children’s dress with a gathered skirt, a ruffle around the neckline, and a full button front.
Its shaped bodice and neatly finished armholes provide a clean foundation for the gathered details. The dress can be sewn in a light woven or a suitable knit.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Stabilize curved woven edges.
- Hem and gather a curved neckline ruffle.
- Enclose the ruffle with a clean neckline band.
- Finish the armholes with narrow fabric strips.
- Gather the skirt to fit the bodice.
- Interface and attach the front bands.
- Test and sew buttonholes before adding buttons.
Fabric and materials
The samples use lightweight denim and rustic cotton. Other cotton wovens and viscose are suggested, and the design can also be made in stretch fabric.
With woven fabric, staystitch curved areas or apply fusible stay tape to keep the neckline and armholes from stretching during construction.
Make it your own
Use a straight or decorative stitch on the ruffle hem and choose a single- or double-fold finish. Select the button size and spacing to complement the fabric.
