What you’ll make

The Sira Draped Top is an easy knit garment with sleeves and a generous draped neckline. Its appearance changes noticeably with the weight and fluidity of the fabric.

In a soft jersey, Sira falls like a lightweight, fluid T-shirt. A more substantial rib knit creates a warmer sweater with less drape and more body.

Wear the neckline in its classic draped position or arrange it as a wider boat neck with one shoulder slightly exposed.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Choose a knit for the amount of drape you want.
  • Stabilize the shoulders with fusible stay tape.
  • Select a stretch, jersey or ballpoint needle.
  • Match sleeve notches and insert the sleeves flat.
  • Sew knit seams with a suitable stretch finish.
  • Finish the back neckline, sleeve hems and lower hem.

Choosing your knit

A soft modal or viscose jersey creates fluid folds and a lightweight T-shirt effect, as shown by the wine-colored sample.

An angora-effect English rib knit gives the design more structure and creates a cozier sweater. Test the needle, stitch and hem finish on a scrap of your fabric.

Make it your own

Arrange the draped neckline for either a classic or wider boat-neck effect. Check the sleeve and body lengths before finishing the hems.

Supported hem finishes include a straight stitch, zigzag, twin needle or a machine blind hem when your machine has the appropriate stitch and foot.
