What you’ll make
Make the Sitges, a convertible design that can be carried as a backpack, handbag, crossbody bag or over your forearm.
It has an open-top main compartment, a zippered outer pocket and a large lining pocket. You decide whether the zipper faces outward or rests against your back for a more protected position.
The finished bag measures approximately 32 cm wide, 36 cm high and 10 cm deep.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Sew and topstitch the strap openings.
- Install the zipper between the outer and lining pieces.
- Assemble the shaped exterior and base while managing bulky seams.
- Add and divide a large lining pocket.
- Join the lining to the outer bag and close the turning opening.
- Thread the webbing through the sliders and rings.
Fabric and structure
Choose a sturdy outer fabric such as canvas, denim or faux leather, with poplin for the lining. Combining outer fabrics is also a useful way to use smaller leftover pieces.
Interfacing or batting controls the structure. Choose lighter reinforcement for a softer bag or a firmer option when you want it to hold its shape.
Match the needle to the material. The class discusses denim, faux-leather and Microtex needles for heavier outer fabrics, along with a finer needle for poplin.
Make it your own
Place the zippered pocket on the visible face or against your back. Leave the lining pocket wide or stitch compartments sized for the belongings you carry.
Use backpack webbing for the adjustable straps or make straps from matching fabric. Check their width against the strap openings before sewing.
