What you’ll make
Sew the Sol, a stretch swim cap for babies and children. Its broad front visor shades the face, while a fabric flap extends over the back of the neck.
A supportive inner layer helps the visor project forward. A knit band can finish the lower edge where the cap, visor, and neck flap meet.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut and identify mirrored stretch-fabric pieces.
- Align curved cap panels using pattern notches.
- Sew Lycra with a stretch needle and elastic stitches.
- Construct and support the visor without excess bulk.
- Attach the visor and neck flap from their center marks.
- Finish the lower edge with a knit binding strip.
Fabric and structure
The cap is designed for Lycra or another stretch fabric. The original project recommends Lycra with sun protection when available.
The class compares a firm plastic insert with medium-weight or lighter interfacing for the visor. Firmer support produces a stiffer visor but requires more care when sewing through the layers.
Use a needle intended for stretch fabrics. Sew with a serger or an elastic machine stitch, or combine a straight seam with a suitable stretch seam finish.
Make it your own
Change the visor’s length or overall size, and adjust its stiffness through your choice of inner support.
The back flap may be hemmed or left with a clean raw edge because Lycra does not fray. Bind the lower edge as demonstrated or finish it with visible serging.
Sizes
The pattern contains three age ranges: 6–18 months, 18 months–3 years, and 3–10 years.
The video class includes a downloadable A4 PDF pattern in all three sizes, with material guidance for the cap and visor support.
