What you’ll make
You’ll make a padded, lined storage bag with a zippered top and a clear front window, so you can see the contents without opening it.
Two sizes hold items such as seasonal clothing, bedding, toys or fabric. Handles make the finished bags easier to move.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Layer exterior fabric with batting.
- Add optional quilting to the exterior.
- Frame a clear vinyl window.
- Install a long zipper around the top corners.
- Reinforce the carrying handles.
- Assemble the box-shaped exterior and lining.
- Turn the bag through a lining opening.
Fabric and structure
The design uses exterior and lining fabrics, batting for body, clear vinyl for the window, backpack webbing for the handles and a long zipper.
Test removable fabric markers on a scrap before marking optional quilting lines.
Make it your own
- Leave the exterior plain or add straight, diagonal or decorative quilting.
- Use plain or glittered clear vinyl for the window.
- Place the handles on the top or sides to suit how you will lift the bag.
Finished sizes
- Medium: approximately 20 cm high × 34 cm wide × 26 cm long, with one top handle.
- Large: approximately 28 cm high × 32 cm wide × 52 cm long, with two side handles.
The intermediate class includes a PDF with measurements, cutting information and material requirements for both storage-bag sizes.
