What you’ll make

Sew a roomy turtleneck sweater with a relaxed silhouette and folded collar. Its loose shape leaves space for layering underneath.

Make it in sweatshirt knit for a casual version or choose a warm, wool-look sweater fabric for a different finish.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Cut the front, back, collar and waistband on grain and fold lines.
  • Sew knits with a ballpoint needle and walking foot.
  • Finish seams with straight stitch and zigzag or a serger.
  • Quarter and distribute the folded collar evenly.
  • Stretch a flexible waistband or gather the sweater for a firmer band.
  • Finish the sleeves with simple hems.

The gathering method also appears in the chef hat tutorial.

Fabric and supplies

Use a suitable sweater fabric, such as sweatshirt knit or a warm wool-look fabric. A ballpoint needle helps protect knit fibers, while a walking foot feeds the layers evenly.

Make it your own

  • Choose a relaxed waistband or one fitted at the hips.
  • Omit the waistband, lengthen the body and add a hem.
  • Adjust the body width, garment length or sleeve length.

Pattern sizing

The updated downloadable pattern includes sizes 34 through 52.

The sweater video is accompanied by an updated downloadable A4 pattern.
