What you’ll make
This cold-weather accessory combines a hood, neck gaiter, and inner panel that can be raised over the mouth.
Wear it around the neck, pull up the hood, or raise the inner gaiter for more coverage. A drawstring lets you bring the hood opening closer around the face.
The included pattern covers children from age 3 through adult sizes.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Prepare knit or fleece pieces without stretching them out of shape.
- Build the curved hood and match its pattern notches.
- Attach the inner gaiter and hood facing.
- Stabilize and install openings for a drawstring.
- Finish the lower edge while keeping the inner gaiter free.
The class also covers machine-stitch and overlock options for constructing and finishing stretch fabrics.
Fabric choices
Use a warm fabric such as sweatshirt knit, brushed French terry, polar fleece, coral fleece, or sherpa.
Select a ballpoint, jersey, or stretch needle to suit the fabric. Materials that shed heavily can be overcast before assembly.
Make it your own
The drawstring is optional. Finish its openings with eyelets or machine-sewn buttonholes, then add cord ends or tie simple knots.
Wear the hood, inner gaiter, and neck section in different combinations to adjust the amount of face and neck coverage.
