What you’ll make

Sew a removable stretch cover for a Group 1 child car seat. It has multiple harness openings, a hook-and-loop front opening, perimeter elastic, and a rear elastic strap.

The elastic edge helps the cover conform to the seat, while the rear strap helps hold it in place. The cover can be removed for washing when needed.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Stabilize selected pieces with knit interfacing.
  • Sew, clip, and turn the shaped upper section.
  • Match notches along the curved panel seams.
  • Finish edges with binding and hook-and-loop tape.
  • Create reinforced harness openings.
  • Distribute perimeter elastic evenly.
  • Attach the rear retaining strap.

Fabric and materials

This design requires stretch knit fabric; woven fabric is not suitable. Use knit interfacing where marked so reinforced areas retain some elasticity.

You will also need elastic for the outer edge and rear retaining strap, plus hook-and-loop tape for the front opening.

Make it your own

Car seats vary, so compare the pattern with your seat before cutting. Confirm the harness-opening positions against the seat and adjust them if needed.

For an infant carrier, see the universal Maxi-Cosi cover.

For help with tiled files, see how to use a PDF sewing pattern.

Compatibility

The universal-style design is intended for Group 1 seats and should suit many models, but check the pattern against the exact seat before sewing.

The video class and printable pattern demonstrate the stretch construction, shaped panels, harness openings, elasticated edge, and rear retaining strap.
