What you’ll make
Sew a roomy clear-vinyl toiletry bag with a zipper, bias-bound zipper edges, and a nautical anchor appliqué.
Its boat-like shape holds beach creams, sprays, and toiletries while keeping them visible. The vinyl is easy to clean and helps separate leaks from the rest of your beach bag.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Handle clear vinyl without treating it like ordinary fabric.
- Help vinyl feed smoothly under the presser foot.
- Stabilize and zigzag an appliqué onto vinyl.
- Bind zipper edges with bias tape.
- Fit a shaped side panel around the bag.
- Turn the vinyl carefully and add a zipper-end tab.
Fabric and supplies
You will need clear vinyl, a zipper, bias tape, and fabric for the appliqué and zipper tab. Interfacing supports the appliqué and limits fraying.
Water-soluble fabric glue helps hold pieces where pins are unsuitable. Avoid adhesives that must be ironed directly onto the vinyl.
Make it your own
Place the anchor in the center or off to one side. Change the appliqué and binding colors, and test your preferred zigzag on a scrap before stitching the motif.
