Waterproof Baby Changing Pad Cover
Today, we’ll show you how to make a baby changing pad cover for a constant battle zone. It’s waterproof, soft, and comfortable for your little one—and so easy to sew!

What you’ll make
Sew a fitted baby changing pad cover with an elasticated edge and a soft terry center panel backed by a waterproof layer.
The cover wraps beneath the pad for a secure fit. Its removable design makes it practical to sew more than one for regular changes.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Adapt the cover to the width, length, and depth of your changing pad.
- Back a terry panel with plastic, PUL, or waterproof nylon.
- Center and topstitch the panel onto the base.
- Box the corners to match the pad depth.
- Divide the cover and elastic for even gathering.
- Attach elastic with a serger or zigzag stitch.
Fabric and waterproof layer
The demonstrated base uses knit fabric, with terry cloth for the center and plastic beneath it. Woven fabric can also be used when extra ease is added.
If the terry fabric is already waterproof, the separate plastic layer is unnecessary. Do not press plastic directly; shape the panel by pressing from the terry side.
Make it your own
Select a base fabric that coordinates with the nursery, or sew several covers for rotation. The adaptable drafting method accommodates changing pads beyond the demonstrated size.
Measurements and fit
The example changing pad measures approximately 72 × 45 cm. Its knit base is cut at 98 × 72 cm, and the terry and waterproof center layers are each cut at 67 × 32 cm.
For another pad, add about 25 cm to its width and length for the base. Subtract about 8 cm from both pad dimensions for the centered terry and waterproof layers.
