What you’ll make

Sew a wrap-front baby bodysuit that opens across the body instead of being pulled over the head. Overlapping fronts and snap fasteners make dressing and changes easier.

The finished bodysuit has long sleeves, bound edges, and snaps at the wrap front and lower opening.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Choose a suitable needle and flexible stitch for stretch knit fabric.
  • Finish knit edges with a serger, zigzag, or overlock-style stitch.
  • Join the shoulders and insert the sleeves while the garment is open.
  • Hem small sleeves before closing the underarm seams.
  • Apply stretch binding without overstretching it.
  • Reinforce the fastening areas and install snaps.

Fabric and sewing setup

The demonstrated bodysuit is made from stretch knit fabric. Use a jersey, stretch, or ballpoint needle suited to the fabric; a walking foot can help the layers feed evenly.

A serger is useful but not essential. The class also demonstrates a zigzag or overlock-style stitch on a regular sewing machine.

Make it your own

Choose plastic or metal snaps to suit your fabric and tools. Snap placement can be adjusted, and an additional fastener may be added depending on the size and fit.

Finish the sleeve hems with a single needle or use a twin needle for parallel rows of stitching.

Pattern sizes

The pattern ranges from preemie through 12–18 months. Trace the required size if you want to preserve the remaining sizes for later.

The video class is accompanied by a downloadable A4 bodysuit pattern.
