What you’ll make
Sew a structured zippered case that can serve as a document holder, pencil case, travel organizer, or storage pouch. The class presents two interiors made from the same base pattern.
The document version has a mesh compartment, one large pocket, and two smaller pockets. The pencil-case version pairs a notebook pocket with divided elastic loops for pencils or pens.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Build layered interior pockets and divide a pocket for cards.
- Finish a mesh compartment with bias tape.
- Use fusible interfacing to add structure.
- Create elastic divisions for pencils or pens.
- Bind curved outer edges with bias tape.
- Sew the zipper around the bound case and through the curves.
Fabric and structure
The cases use exterior and lining fabrics, mesh, a zipper, bias tape, and interfacing. Fine fusible interfacing supports lightweight pockets, while a firmer layer structures the assembled case.
Add elastic for the pencil or pen organizer. Clips or temporary textile adhesive can help keep mesh and bias tape aligned while sewing.
Make it your own
Choose the interior that suits what you carry. Mesh and card pockets work for health or travel documents, while the notebook pocket and elastic loops create a portable drawing or planning case.
A section cut from one continuous fabric piece can omit its center joining seam. The class also shows an optional fabric tab for the zipper pull.
The video class includes a downloadable base pattern with measurements and material information for both interior options.
