There’s no back-to-school season without a new pencil case… we just love them! They come in a thousand shapes—round, square, with two or three zippers, minimalist, extra-large… and in a thousand and one colors.
And since we love DIY, we never miss the opportunity to sew a new one every year.
It couldn’t be any other way: we have several tutorials for sewing pencil cases, so you can choose the one that best suits your style. The problem? You’re going to have a hard time choosing just one.
We’re starting with our new tutorial of the week, which we uploaded just a few hours ago to the Lulu Ferris.
1. Round pencil case with the option of a mouse or cat face… we should call it the Tom and Jerry pencil case.
This adorable little pencil case has just come out of the oven, and its round shape fits all your pencils, pens, erasers…
In the PDF, we give you the patterns in case you want to make it like ours in the tutorial, with mouse ears. You’ll also find a cat option. Don’t let the zipper scare you; we’ve used a sewing technique to make it easier for you.
2. Square pencil case with a carrying strap
You’ll find this option on our YouTube channel. It’s a basic of the basics: you’ll learn how to sew a zipper and add depth.
If you’ve only recently started sewing, you’ll be able to make this pencil case without any problems; just remember to follow the step-by-step instructions.
3. Multipurpose half-moon pencil case
XL pencil case—with its shape, you can store almost anything inside. We created it with sewing accessories in mind, but we already know that you can use it for whatever you like. It’s also perfect as a travel toiletry bag.
Inside, you’ll find a divider and an elastic band for storing pens or pencils upright.
4. Cork pencil case with two zippers
You can choose cork or regular fabric. This pencil case has two zippers because there’s a divider in the center. It looks beautiful and is very practical, but watch out! If you’ve just started sewing, I don’t recommend it.
If you make it with fabric, use something thick or add interfacing to give it structure.
5. Pencil case with an elastic band for notebooks
If you’re a minimalist, this pencil case will be perfect for you: small, with an elastic band so you can wrap it around notebooks, books, planners…
In the Lulu Ferris tutorial, we show you how to sew it with clear plastic so you can see what’s inside, but you can sew it with fabric and it looks spectacular. You can add trim or pom-pom fringe, like in the photo.

6. A wallet that we can transform into a pencil case ;)
In this tutorial, we show you how to make a wallet with two zippers: one on an interior pocket that separates two sections, and the large exterior zipper. You can transform it into a pencil case by lengthening the pattern measurements we provide.
Keep in mind that it’s best to use the side sections for storing larger items, since there’s a gap at the bottom of the exterior zipper where pencils could slip through.
