What you’ll make
Sew a lined cylindrical pencil case with round ends, a neatly concealed zipper, and bias-bound interior seams.
The class demonstrates a mouse face with ears, while the included pattern also offers cat ears. Leave off the animal details for a streamlined case that works beyond back-to-school season.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Fuse interfacing to give the case structure.
- Build appliquéd ears and facial details.
- Install a zipper beneath a prepared seam.
- Baste exterior and lining layers into single units.
- Match quarter points to sew circular ends evenly.
- Bind curved interior seams with bias tape.
Choosing your fabric
The case uses an interfaced exterior and a separate lining. Felt works for the demonstrated outer ears, or you can make fabric ears with added interfacing.
Make it your own
Choose the mouse or cat pattern, invent another animal, or omit the face and ears. A phrase, pom-pom trim, or a Kraft-Tex label can create a more personal version.

Finished size
The finished pencil case measures approximately 23 cm long with a circular diameter of 7.5 cm.
