What you’ll make

Make a soft, lined sheep-shaped bag with a sherpa body, an appliquéd face, dimensional ears and dangling legs.

The sheep’s head forms the flap, while snaps close the bag and adjust the strap. A child can help draw, cut and arrange the facial features.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Apply fusible web and secure appliqué with zigzag stitching.
  • Sew and turn the ears and legs.
  • Shape and finish a rounded flap.
  • Control thick sherpa layers with a walking foot.
  • Join the outer bag, flap and lining.
  • Install snaps for the closure and adjustable strap.

Fabric and materials

Sherpa creates the sheep’s fleece and soft texture. You will also use lining, colorful fabric for the features, fusible web, bias tape or webbing, and snaps.

Sherpa can stretch out of shape without recovering. Handle it gently, secure the edges as demonstrated and use a walking foot across the thickest sections.

Make it your own

Change the expression by moving the cheeks, drawing different eyes or adding a nose or mouth.

The eyes can also be stitched with help from the beginner embroidery class.

Keep the flap and body corners square or round them. Add several snap positions to adjust the strap for its wearer.

The video covers the appliqué, bag construction and adjustable strap. The downloadable pattern provides the sheep’s features and main cutting measurements.
