What you’ll make
Create a hand-embroidered cactus sampler and finish it as a padded hoop display with a neatly covered back.
The project combines five foundational stitches for outlines, texture, small filled areas, flowers, and details.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Choose floss, needles, fabric, and a suitable hoop.
- Transfer and center a printed design.
- Separate floss strands and secure the thread neatly.
- Work stem, fly, straight, chain, and lazy daisy stitches.
- Control hoop and stitch tension.
- Back the completed hoop for a tidy display finish.
Fabric and materials
Closely woven cotton or linen makes the stitches easier to control and helps limit visible holes. You will also need embroidery floss, a sharp needle, small scissors, a hoop, and a removable marker.
A zigzag finish can reduce fraying before embroidery. Batting and felt or another coordinating fabric are used to finish the hoop for display.
Make it your own
Use the stitches on clothing, accessories, curtains, pillows, or other sewn projects. Change the cactus colors, stitch density, or floral details.
Try them on a zippered pillow cover, birthday crown, school smock, or health record cover.
