Today we’ve gathered three tutorials that are perfect for getting started, which is why we’ve called this post Beginner Sewing. In each one, you’ll learn something new and different—perfect for practicing. But of course, they’re for everyone: you don’t have to be a beginner to make them, you just have to enjoy being comfortable :)
Because, as you’ve already read, in these tutorials you’ll learn how to make pillows! We’ll show you how to make the covers as well as the filling, in case you want to create everything yourself.

Beginner sewing: pillow time!The first pillow we’re bringing you is large, round, and soft. We designed ours for little ones: a pouf pillow for them to take to daycare or anywhere in the house. Since the idea is for them to carry it around, we added a handle, but whether you add one is up to you, depending on how you plan to use it.
Since it’s a round pillow, this tutorial will be perfect for practicing curved sewing. You’ll also see how to make the inner cover and how to fill it. In this case, we’ll use Velcro for the closure.

If you’re also making it for little ones, a good idea would be to make it with waterproof fabric so it’s very easy to clean and can withstand anything. You can also pre-treat the fabric and waterproof it yourself with Odicoat (we show you how in this other video).
Still not ready to try curved sewing and would rather start with something straight? Would you prefer to work with a pillow as a reference so you don’t have to make the filling? Then you’re going to love the next idea…
It’s an envelope-style pillow cover with no zipper. In addition to learning the technique for creating a cover from a pillow, you’ll learn how to attach bias tape to give your sewing projects a much more polished and professional finish.

So now we have a round pillow and a square one. All that’s missing is a rectangular one, in bolster form. In this case, you’ll learn how to insert a zipper so it turns out perfectly: it’s almost invisible and therefore doesn’t dig in either.
You’ll also be able to see, step by step, how to make a decorative appliqué: specifically, that beautiful cactus Laura made, complete with its pot and little flowers.
