We absolutely love pencil cases, both for ourselves and for the kids. For storing crochet hooks, colored pencils, or makeup brushes… We love that they’re small containers of pure creativity. Every time you open one to take something out, you know something lovely is about to happen.

5 ways to make a pencil case with a sewing machine1. Simple zippered pencil case
We’ll start with the simplest model: a simple zippered pencil case with a strap for hanging, attaching, or carrying it.
To make it, you’ll need a pretty fabric for the outside, another for the lining, and interfacing to give it structure, as well as the zipper and another small piece of fabric for the outside strap.
It’s very easy to make, and the tutorial is one of the most popular on our YouTube channel, with more than 44 000 views!
2. Pencil case with a center divider and double zipper
Here you have the “older sibling” of the previous model. It’s a little more complicated to make, so it may not be the best idea if you’re just starting out, but it will help you keep practicing and learning if you’ve already been spending some time at the sewing machine.
For this design, we used cork fabric, which gives it structure and a very original look. We don’t currently have it in stock in the store, but if you’d like us to let you know when we order it again, you can send us a message.
3. Pencil case with elastic to attach it to your notebook
This is one of our favorites, and we have a special affection for it. That’s because we created it specifically to use with the Lulú Ferris sewing notebook, but it can be adapted to any notebook or planner.
It’s perfect if you’re a minimalist and like to carry only the essentials. Or if you’re forgetful and tend to bring your notebook but forget your pencil case, or vice versa. That way, you have both things together.
It’s not just because we made it ourselves, but it really is wonderful. Comfortable, practical, clever, and absolutely gorgeous. We made it with clear plastic so you can see what’s inside and, while we’re at it, add a little water resistance.
4. XL-size multi-purpose pencil case
Want something bigger? Then the half-moon case is for you. This pencil case is less conventional, but it can be used in many different ways. We made ours as a sewing kit for storing markers, scissors, cutters, thread snips, pincushions, thread…
You can use it for whatever you like, even as a toiletry bag. And if you’ve never sewn a curved zipper, you’ll be able to get past that small obstacle and take another step in your learning. Nothing to be afraid of!
5. Roll-up pencil case
And we’ll finish with another little oddity from our YouTube channel. A model that will (surely) steal your heart if you’re an artist or makeup artist, and that’s also fabulous for little ones.
It’s as professional as it gets: you roll it up onto itself so it takes up very little space and, when you get to work, you unfold it to have all your tools and colors in view.
Very easy to make: no complications or difficult steps, so you can give it a try if you’re taking your first steps.
