What you’ll make

The Alex is a children’s zip-front hoodie or jacket with a two-piece hood, side-seam pockets, rib-knit cuffs, and a rib-knit waistband.

A guard covers the top of the zipper to reduce contact around the chin and neck. The everyday silhouette can be sewn in sweatshirt knit, French terry, or warm fleece.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Stabilize stretchy front edges before adding the zipper.
  • Sew the two-piece hood and finish its front edge.
  • Build pockets into the side seams.
  • Set closed sleeves into the armholes using the notches.
  • Stretch the cuffs and waistband evenly to fit.
  • Align the zipper at the waistband and neckline.
  • Add the upper zipper guard.

Fabric and sewing setup

Choose sweatshirt knit, French terry, or warm fleece with enough body to support the garment’s shape. Rib knit is used for the cuffs and waistband.

Use a stretch, jersey, or ballpoint needle. The class also discusses stabilizing highly elastic zipper edges with lightweight interfacing.

Make it your own

  • Omit the upper zipper guard.
  • Lengthen the sleeves and leave off the rib-knit cuffs.
  • Adjust the waistband ribbing for a gathered or straighter lower edge.
  • Add subtle or contrasting reinforcement stitching at the pockets.
  • Leave off the sleeves and finish the armholes to make a vest.
  • Pair it with the Ben Joggers.
  • Pair it with the children’s harem pants.
  • Pair it with the Basic Leggings.

Pattern sizing

The pattern includes six size bands: 4/5, 6/7, 8/9, 10/11, 12/13, and 14/15.

The chart covers heights of 105–170 cm, chests of 54–86 cm, waists of 52–72 cm, and hips of 58–88 cm. Use the child’s measurements to choose a size.

The class includes the sewing video, tiled A4 and copy-shop A0 patterns, and an information file with the size chart and fabric guidance.
