What you’ll make
The Amelia is a comfortable midi shirt dress with very short sleeves, a full button front, waist pleats, and a self-fabric belt.
A decorative pocket flap adds a tailored detail, while the belt and belt loops define the waist.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Identify the dress pieces and facing lines.
- Stabilize curved and bias-cut edges.
- Interface and sew the neckline and front facings.
- Set the sleeves and finish the side seams.
- Make belt loops, a belt, and a pocket flap.
- Mark and sew buttonholes and attach buttons.

Fabric options
The sample is sewn in linen. Shirting-weight poplin creates a crisper result, while viscose adds movement and drape. Crepe is another option named in the class notes.
Interfacing supports the collar facing and buttonhole side of the front. Very lightweight fabric may also need support behind the buttons.
Make it your own
Add one pocket flap, mirror it with a second flap, or omit the detail. Sew the side seams fully closed or add side slits at a height you choose.
