What you’ll make

Sew a soft knit baby hat with a folded forehead band and two pointed ends that tie into playful little ears.

The shaped crown joins to a slightly smaller band, which is gently stretched for a close fit.

This compact beginner project can coordinate with the reversible baby booties.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Identify the grain direction in knit fabric.
  • Cut mirrored crown pieces and a forehead band.
  • Sew knit with a ballpoint or jersey needle.
  • Guide the crown smoothly around curves.
  • Mark quarter points for even alignment.
  • Stretch the smaller band as it is joined.
  • Finish the seam before tying the ears.

Fabric and materials

Use knit fabric with enough stretch for the fitted band. The sample combines two coordinating knits, but the same fabric can be used for every piece.

A ballpoint or jersey needle is suitable for the knit. A walking foot can help the layers feed evenly, and a serger is optional.

Make it your own

Mix two prints or colors for contrast, or cut every piece from the same knit. Choose a warmer knit for colder weather.

The folded band can be adjusted slightly to suit the baby, and the pointed ends can be tied to shape the ears.

Baby sizing

  • 0–3 months: height 62 cm; head circumference 33–35 cm.
  • 3–6 months: height 68 cm; head circumference 35–42 cm.
  • 6–12 months: height 71 cm; head circumference 40–49 cm.

Choose the size using the baby’s current measurements rather than age alone.

The class includes one video lesson and a downloadable pattern in three baby sizes.
