What you’ll make
Make a padded baby nest with stuffed sides, an adjustable drawcord, and a separate foam mattress. The mattress slips into a zippered cover that can be removed for washing.
Using two coordinating fabrics creates several combinations because the mattress and base can each be turned to show a different side.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Sew a removable zippered mattress cover.
- Form boxed corners for a shaped fit around the foam.
- Join the main base layers while leaving turning openings.
- Apply bias tape as a channel around the curved edge.
- Thread the drawcord before filling the sides.
- Stuff the sides evenly and close the openings.
Fabric and materials
The project uses two main fabrics, foam for the removable mattress, soft filling for the padded sides, bias tape, cord, and a zipper at least 35 cm long.
You can make a spare mattress cover for use between washes. The original tutorial also suggests a separate waterproof cover to help protect the foam.
Make it your own
Mix two prints or colors and turn the mattress or base to change the visible combination. Additional zippered mattress covers can make washing and rotation easier.

The specified foam mattress measures 33 cm wide × 66 cm long × 3 cm thick.
