What you’ll make
Sew the Barbara Bag, a compact rectangular crossbody with a top zipper, a roomy lined interior, and an internal slip pocket.
The demonstrated version has side tabs and an adjustable fabric strap with swivel hooks, making it practical for everyday essentials.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Stabilize the exterior for the desired body.
- Install a zipper between the exterior and lining.
- Shape the bag around the zipper section.
- Add and divide an interior slip pocket.
- Assemble the lining and turn the bag cleanly.
- Make an adjustable strap with swivel hooks.
Fabric and supplies
Canvas is recommended for a durable exterior, with cotton poplin for the lining. Lightweight faux leather can create a dressier version.
Use fusible interfacing when the exterior needs more structure. Lighter fabrics can take medium interfacing or batting, depending on the finish you want.
Make it your own
- Add a pocket to one or both lining panels.
- Leave the pocket whole or divide it into sections.
- Use a fixed, adjustable, removable, or chain strap.
- Choose a contrasting lining.

Finished size
The completed Barbara Bag measures approximately 21 cm wide, 15 cm high, and 8 cm deep.
Some sewing experience is useful for managing the zipper area, curved seams, and multiple layers. The pattern includes the exterior, lining, pocket, and strap-tab pieces.
