What you’ll make
Sew a roomy adult backpack with a drawstring-and-flap closure, two dimensional exterior pockets and a lined interior for organizing everyday belongings.
Inside, a structured divider can hold a laptop, tablet or notebook. A hook-and-loop strap keeps it in place, while divided pockets organize smaller items.
Contoured, padded shoulder straps provide comfort. A sleeve across the back slips over a rolling suitcase handle for easier travel.

- Install a drawstring casing, cord lock and flap closure.

Fabric and structure
Choose a sturdy canvas-style fabric for the exterior. Use a lighter fabric such as poplin for the lining, or nylon for a more water-resistant interior.
Different weights of interfacing and stabilizer give the body, divider, flap and shoulder straps the appropriate structure.
Make it your own
Close the flap with either a swivel hook or a buckle. Use snaps or hook-and-loop tape on the exterior pockets, and add optional topstitching if desired.
Divide the interior organizer to suit your belongings. The exterior pockets may be repositioned or omitted, and the suitcase sleeve can be made from fabric or backpack webbing.
