What you’ll make

Sew a cool summer tank with a relaxed, slightly long silhouette and a curved hem.

The wide straps and shaped back conceal bra straps. Pair it with jeans or dress it up with Easton pants.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Prepare your machine for fine knit fabric.
  • Distribute knit binding evenly around the neckline and armholes.
  • Finish stretch seams with a zigzag stitch or serger.
  • Topstitch the bindings so they stay flat.
  • Sew the side seams and finish the curved hem.

Choosing your fabric

Use a knit fabric with some stretch. A fine T-shirt knit creates a fluid top, while a knit with less drape gives the shape more structure.

A woven version is possible, but its neckline and armholes require a woven bias-binding method instead of the knit technique demonstrated here.

Make it your own

Add an optional patch pocket, bows at the straps, or decorative trim. Your choice of drape, color, and print can make the same shape feel casual or polished.

Sizing

The included pattern covers sizes 34–48. The tank is designed for a loose fit rather than a close fit.

The video demonstrates the full knit construction and shows seam-finishing options for a standard sewing machine or serger.
